It’s Thanksgiving Day here in the United States, and if you were celebrating, I hope you were enjoying the day the way you love best.
One of the standard tropes on Thanksgiving Day is to think of things we’re thankful for. Family, friends, health, home, fulfilling careers, and the lists go on.
But, on Thanksgiving Day (and every other day!) I also like to reflect on all the things I’m grateful for—that did not happen.
There are so many ways even the simplest day can go completely off the rails!
Every day that goes well is a cause for gratitude!
So . . . think about what didn’t happen today? Yesterday? This year?
I drove to town and wasn’t in a car wreck, despite the pickup truck that passed in the face of oncoming traffic and careened straight at me.
I dropped my eggs as I carried in the groceries, and not. one. egg. broke!
The pressure tank for our well is working. And so we have water! The hot water heater works, too. So does the furnace! The electricity is on!! (I haven’t always been so blessed!)
All summer long, I worked in the garden and was not bitten by a venomous snake. Nor was I stung by a wasp. Nor attacked by a pack of wild dogs. (Seriously. That last happened to a friend of mine.)
The check engine light on my car turned out to be absolutely nothing.
I slipped on some ice but caught myself before I fell.
Literally every single day we wake up—and everyone we love wakes as well . . . well, that’s a cause for celebration!
Every day we are able to make our way through our daily tasks (and everyone we love does likewise) is cause for celebration.
Every day we and those we love are able to crawl under the covers at bedtime is cause for celebration!
SO CELEBRATE!!
Happy Thanksgiving!
